The P4C program aims to enhance children’s critical thinking, communication, and self-esteem through philosophical inquiry across the curriculum. It fosters an environment of open dialogue and debate, particularly improving reading and maths outcomes for disadvantaged children in KS2. The program supports encourages children to explore diverse perspectives.
P4C is implemented in weekly “Philosophy Circles,” with sessions lasting 15-20 minutes. Teachers use diverse resources to initiate discussions. Sessions start with warm-up activities to engage children, leading to in-depth discussions on relevant topics. Classrooms are arranged to facilitate interaction, with children leading dialogue using non-verbal cues.
P4C shows a significant impact on children’s academic performance, boosting confidence, listening skills and articulation. It enhances critical reasoning, cognitive skills and social awareness, contributing positively to the school’s ethos and children’s personal development.
